Dog Physiotherapy

Dog Physiotherapy – gentle movement therapy for your dog

Physiotherapy helps your dog move more freely and with less pain – with arthritis, after an operation, or simply to stay fit in old age. I'm an English-speaking therapist and I come to you, where your dog feels most at ease.

In plain terms

What is dog physiotherapy?

In short: physical therapy for your dog.

Dog physiotherapy transfers the proven principles of human physiotherapy to the dog. It's a conservative treatment: it works from the outside, through hands-on techniques and targeted exercises – without surgery and usually without additional medication.

The goal is the same as for us humans: relieve pain, restore mobility and build muscle. Physiotherapy doesn't replace the vet – it complements veterinary care and works exactly where medication alone isn't enough: with movement itself.

When it helps

Conditions – when physiotherapy makes sense

Physiotherapy is far more than „rehab after surgery“. It helps with acute problems just as much as preventively.

1Joints & wear

  • Osteoarthritis & arthritis
  • Hip dysplasia (HD), Elbow dysplasia (ED)
  • Patellar luxation, OCD
  • chronic joint pain

2After surgery

  • Cruciate ligament rupture & repair
  • joint replacements
  • rehab & faster healing
  • rebuilding muscle after rest

3Spine & nerves

  • Herniated disc
  • Spondylosis, Cauda equina syndrome
  • paralysis & ataxia
  • relearning movement patterns

4Muscles & fascia

  • tension & adhesions
  • muscle loss (atrophy)
  • compensatory postures
  • muscular imbalances

5Senior dogs

  • maintaining mobility
  • less everyday pain
  • easier stairs & getting up
  • more joy of life

6Prevention & sport

  • preventing injuries
  • muscle training for sporting dogs
  • coordination & balance
  • support with excess weight
How it works

How a treatment session works

Every session is individual – it always begins with a thorough assessment, from which a treatment plan is developed.

1

Assessment & examination

I take a close look at gait, posture, joints and muscles and go through the history and veterinary diagnoses with you.

2

Massage & manual techniques

Targeted grips release tension and adhesions, boost circulation and relieve pain.

3

Manual lymphatic drainage

Gentle techniques help drain swelling and congestion – for example after operations.

4

Passive & active mobilisation

I move the joints gently through their range; then come active exercises your dog performs itself.

5

Movement & muscle-building training

Exercises for strength, stability, balance and coordination – often playfully, with treats or a toy.

6

Heat, taping & home exercises

Heat applications, kinesio taping and simple exercises you can do yourself between sessions.

The benefits

What physiotherapy achieves

For many dogs the difference is visible and noticeable after just a few sessions.

Less pain – often with less or no additional medication.
More mobility – getting up, stairs and walks become easier again.
Stronger muscles – more stable joints and less faulty loading.
Faster rehab – back on their feet sooner after surgery or injury.
More quality of life – especially for senior and chronically ill dogs.
Prevention – injuries and secondary damage are reduced.
Straight talk for sceptics

Common questions & doubts – answered honestly

To some, physiotherapy sounds like „wellness“. It isn't – here are the key points.

Isn't this just esoteric or wellness?

No. Dog physiotherapy is based on the same anatomical and physiotherapeutic principles as human physiotherapy. It's about concrete, verifiable goals: mobilising joints, building muscle, reducing pain – not miracles.

Does it replace the vet?

No, and it's not meant to. Physiotherapy complements veterinary treatment. With acute pain, sudden lameness or unclear symptoms, your dog should see the vet first. I work hand in hand with the veterinary diagnosis.

Do I need a referral from my vet?

A referral isn't strictly required to book me. A veterinary diagnosis is helpful, however, and with acute or unclear problems it's a prerequisite so we can treat safely and sensibly.

How will I notice it's working?

Often in everyday things: your dog gets up more easily, moves more smoothly, enjoys longer walks again, adopts a more natural posture or simply seems more relaxed. With chronic conditions such as arthritis, the aim is to noticeably ease the situation and keep it stable.

Is the treatment stressful for my dog?

On the contrary – it's gentle and low-pain. And because I come to your home, your dog stays in familiar surroundings. That removes stress and makes the treatment pleasant for many dogs.

What does it cost and how often is it needed?

That depends on the effort involved, the findings and the travel distance. After the first thorough assessment I'll discuss the cost transparently and a realistic plan. After injuries, progress often shows within a few sessions; chronic cases need a little patience and regularity.
